Getting a Visa

Brief step by step guide about getting a US F-1 student visa is as follows:

Step 1: Research the universities and the courses that you want to pursue for your studies.

Step 2: Prepare for GRE (if Master's degree) and TOEFL.

Step 3: Provide your tests at an ETS approved test center. Make sure to provide your universities of choice to send your Official test scores to.

Step 4: Apply to the universities of your choice through their webpages. Each university has their unique set of requirements.

Step 5: Wait for a decision from the universities of your choice. Once you receive your acceptance from the universities, you should accept the one that appeals the most to you.

Step 6: The university will send you the I-20 via email

Step 7: Pay the SEVIS fees. Complete the Online Non-immigrant visa application (DS-160). Note that the Photo provided must match the US visa requirements.

Step 8: Schedule the visa interview at a US consulate at the country you reside in.

F-1 visa students can only be issued a visa 120 days before the start date of the course. You cannot enter the United States before 30 days of the start date.

You will typically have to do a biometric/fingerprinting before you appear for the visa interview.

On the Interview Day:

Please carry the following at the minimum for your in-person visa interview:
  • Passport (should be valid for at least 6 months beyond your period of stay in the US)
